2. Step 1 Useshortcut keys. The "official" command for an EM dash in most Macsoftware is shift + option (--) + hyphen. Just hold all three down andyou will get an EM dash.
3. Step 2 UseSpecial Characters palette. In many Mac programs, you can pull down theEdit menu and at the bottom you will find Special Characters. Openthis, and then select the Punctuation menu. The EM dash is the longestof the dashes shown. Double click on it to insert it in your text.
4. Step 3 Cutand paste. While most standard Mac software uses either or both of theabove options, you may find that you have some nonstandard softwarewithout it. In that case, open TextEdit.app, the free text editingsoftware that comes with every Mac computer, and use the Edit menu toaccess Special Characters. Again, choose the Punctuation menu anddouble-click on the EM dash. Then cut and paste the EM dash to thesoftware you're using.
5. Step 4 Usedouble hyphens. In some software, such as Microsoft Word for Mac, youcan generate an EM dash by typing a word followed with two hyphens andanother word. As long as you don't put spaces between the words and thehyphens, the software will automatically generate an EM dash. However,not all software will do this, so it should not be the method you relyon. In most cases, you are better off using the shortcut keys.
